Honestly, with electronics you get what you pay for. You might be able to get a really cheap meter ($20 or less), but you'll get something that is not accurate or consistent.

I also do not recommend the KII (K2) meter since the lights that show up on the meter only give you a range of EMF, luckily this meter is supposedly no longer in production, but you can still buy it everywhere.

I do recommend the MEL-8704 meter. (I'm not selling mine!)

Then again, if cost was not an option I highly recommend the Trifield Meter! I don't own one of these anymore, but it was great while I had it. I do not have any for sale, but hopefully this info helps!

Just out of curiosity, how much would you expect to pay for a used Trifield Meter? Why is this particular model so great? (I'm new in the field!)

First of all the Trifield Meter is a Tri-Axis meter, which basically means it measures a larger area around it and in a more precise manner. Many investigators feel that the single axis measures a more precise area, but in reality it measures only in one space at a time, how could you expect to measure spontaneous activity in one general area? Many investigators are also fooled by a little thing called the inverse square law, but that's a topic for a different time.

The Trifield Meter is a tri-axis meter and is able to detect specific types of frequencies (magnetic, electric, microwave/radio) separately or together. Many tri-axis meters give you the highest rating in the surrounding area, but it won't tell you where it's coming from. The Trifield Meter does the math that provides the average reading from the three axes you are measuring. Confusing, huh?

The needle type may seem like old fashioned, but it's more accurate than the digital displays since there is a quicker turnaround from the data being determined to it being displayed. A MEL meter shows this with the amount of lag you can see while doing readings with a Trifield next to it.

Is the Trifield Meter the best tri axis? For the money, yes, but there are others out there that far out perform it, but you'll spend $1,000 or more. The Trifield usually goes for around $150, so used it should be around $100 (buyer beware as they tend to not work as well if they are mistreated or need calibration). Also, the Trifield Natural is a different meter than the Trifield Meter (it measures natural EMF while the regular Trifield measures manmade EMF).

It's a great site, but I also urge you to comparison shop by searching by the model number of the device you like. Also don't forget to take into consideration the shipping costs from site to site and calculate that into the price.

Excellent - I'm checking those out now, Doug. I tried to find one on Amazon in Canada a while back but had no luck. The detector Brian has recommended has the needle that moves...is this generally preferred or does anyone go with the digital models?

I need to agree with Brian, the 8704 is a very good model. I had one, and gave to a friend from Rio de Janeiro...

Taking the ride here, sometimes I evaluate EMF Meters, one that I´ll try is the Ramsey Tri Field, what seems a very improved K2, with high sensibility. You need to build it, but if you pay more 50 dollars, you can find somebody to sell it assembled.

Other interesting device is the TENMARS TM-190 EMF Meter (I will test it as soon it arrives to me). I have the TM-192, what is a good device, the only bad point is doesn´t having backlight.

Have always had a bit of a fetish for Trifield EMF meters. Felt like a proper paranormal investigator once I got my hot little hands on one! Would recommend both an extended range EMF meter and a Natural EM meter, if the budget will run to this combination. They meter different things. The Narural EM doesn't react to 60Hz AC power, only naturally present EM fields, so it will pick up emanations the EMF meter won't.

If you guys are concerned about shipping costs, well - you want to try living in New Zealand! It's nice and peaceful here, but the international postage is a killer. Wish I hadn't heard of LessEMF.com now..

I spent a lot of money on my first meters as I bought a regular Trifield and then a Trifield Natural a few months later. While investigating a TB hospital in Oklahoma my meter "jumped" from my hands and made a tumble down the stairs. It didn't quite work the same ever again. My Trifield Natural, which is never carried around, still exists in my equipment case after having it for about 15 years. A KII, Gauss Meter, Ghost Meter, and a KIII, have all been liquidated from my case in that time.
